The Memorial Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c) – 3 charitable organization. It was started in memory of James Victor Horning in 2007 to help keep the spirit of James alive by helping students and families in need.
James was a senior at Wm. Mason High School when in October of his senior year he was tragically killed in an automobile accident while coming home from his girlfriend’s house on a Monday evening.
His death is not a story of drinking and driving, or a reckless teen doing what he should not have been doing. It is simply a cautionary tale of an inexperienced driver on a very wet road during a thunderstorm who was NOT WEARING HIS SEAT BELT. He was only doing 45 MPH and came upon a car in the slow lane too quickly and tried to miss the car by turning the wheel; catching the back bumper; spinning and then flipping his truck. Upon impact, he was thrown from his vehicle and did not survive.
Among the JVH Foundations many messages to students, remembering to wear your seat belts is one of our most heartfelt. We like to remind all of the students who attend our many events that your parents love you dearly and deserve to send you of to your senior prom, cheer for you from the stands during athletic competitions, clap for you as you receive your high school diploma, and embrace you with a huge hug as you go off to your first day of college. Sadly, James’ parents were unable to do all of those things as he forgot to click his seat belts that night.
Following his passing, James’ father, Jim Sr. along with several of his closest friends, James’ former coaches and teachers, started the JVH Memorial Foundation to help students in need and to keep the spirit of James alive in hopes that it will help others (especially families who are dealing with a similar loss).
